Sometimes the journey is just as spectacular as the destination. Are you looking to hit the open road in 2017 and want new inspiration on some breathtaking destinations? Here are three driving trips where the voyage is just as beautiful as the arrival.

Iceland

Iceland is a quixotic destination of contrasts, and its natural scenery is spellbinding. If you’re looking for a self-drive holiday that will take your breath away at every corner, then this is the journey for you. The landscape is rugged and dramatic, complete with active volcanoes, incredible thermal pools, and grandiose age-old glaciers. The vibrant capital city of Reykjavík contrasts with the beauty of the volcanic wilderness. And the invigorating Blue Lagoon seems a world away from isolated islands that colonies of puffins make their home. Driving around Iceland is an adventure in itself. There are gravelly mountain roads, blind corners, summits and plenty of animals crossing your path. So always make sure you are aware of all the road rules before embarking on a self-drive holiday. With that said, though, the expedition is worth the adventure! Iceland delights with incredible lakes and waterfalls, dramatic landscapes, spectacular wildlife and majestic glacier vistas.

South Of France

The sizzling south of France was just made for a self-drive holiday. To get to the south of France prepare for at least 12 hours behind the wheel from Calais. Most people choose to stopover along the way in the many towns on offer. Driving from Calais, you can take a 2 and a half hour drive to Reims, the unofficial capital of France’s famous Champagne region. Here you can spend a day touring the wine cellars and Champagne houses. Or maybe just stop off for lunch and then head through beautiful Burgundy to arrive in Beaune for the night.  The next day you can drive an hour and a half to the riverside sophistication of Lyon. Here you’ll meet with gastronomical and wine delights, fantastic museums and laid-back French lifestyle. It’s worthy of another stopover. Leaving Lyon by car, you can be in irresistible Provence in three and a half hours or the luxurious seaside resort of Cannes in four.

West Coast, USA

No self-drive holiday inspiration would be complete without a USA West Coast itinerary. Take to the open road in a convertible and visit Yosemite Valley, the Golden Gate Bridge, Napa Valley, Death Valley and Las Vegas. From the awesome city of San Francisco (don’t forget to visit Alcatraz) you’ll take an easy drive to the spellbinding Napa Valley. Here you’ll fall upon acres of verdant landscape and luscious wineries worthy of taking a couple of nights off driving to enjoy a tipple or two. The Napa Valley Wine Train is also worth jumping aboard to experience cellar doors and gourmet food along the way. From Napa, you can drive to California’s Sierra Mountains to spectacular Yosemite National Park. Spend a few days here basking in the glory of nature, enjoying hiking, biking, wildlife, waterfalls, lakes and Glacier Point. In stark contrast, you’ll end your self-drive journey in Sin City, Las Vegas. You’ll want to relax and go wild for a few nights here. Make the most of Michelin star restaurants, luxurious swimming pools and awesome shopping. The neon lights of Vegas are the perfect way to end this incredible West Coast journey.
