If you’re a foodie with a sweet tooth, there’s arguably no better city in Europe than the Italian capital. So, when you’re looking to book your next holiday consider Rome. City breaks to Rome are more affordable than you may think, leaving more spending money for those Italian delicacies. In this article, we take a look at the city’s must-try desserts and where to find them.

Tiramisu

This famed Italian dessert roughly translates to ‘pick me up’- which is apt given the generous soaking of coffee. Ladyfingers are also layered with a whipped mixture of eggs, sugar, and mascarpone cheese. It’s finished with a dusting of cocoa on top. For the most authentic tiramisu, head to Bar Pompi in the north of the city. An expert team of chefs have been perfecting their secret recipe for over 50 years.

Gelato

Derived from the Latin wordgelātus meaning frozen, this lower calorie alternative to ice cream is heavenly. With over 5,000 ice cream parlours scattered all over Italy, gelato competition is fierce. The best in Rome can be found on the Via Collino at the famed parlour, I Caruso. Here you can watch the team hand make the ice cream from scratch with natural and fresh ingredients – delizioso.

Panforte

This fruitcake dates back to the 13th century and offers the most authentic Italian dessert experience. It’s rumoured that the Roman soldiers would eat this for energy before long marches. Recipes for the dish are heavily guarded and passed down from generation to generation. This is no exception at the popular cake shop, Bar Pasticceria Caretta. You can enjoy a slice or two which should provide enough energy for a full day exploring the sights.

Cannoli

Not to be confused with the pasta dish, cannelloni, this dessert is truly indulgent. A fried pastry dough contains a sweet, creamy filling of ricotta and is lightly sprinkled with icing sugar. It may not be good for your waistline, but it’s totally worth it. La Cannoleria Siciliana in the Piazza Dei Re di Roma will have you going for seconds and possibly thirds.

Sweet tooth or not, you won’t want to miss some of Rome’s delicious treats. There’re plenty of great restaurants to choose from – you’ll be spoilt for choice.
